Looks like Lindsay Lohan will be doing some time for her necklace-stealing crime. During Friday's hearing, Judge Stephanie Sautner sentenced the actress to 120 days in jail and 480 hours of community service. The sentence came as a result of Lohan, 24, allegedly stealing a $2,500 necklace from a jewelry store in January, which violated her probation -- but it seems that the judge is punishing LiLo just as much for her unrepentant attitude.
"I see the intent here," Sautner said of Lohan's crime. "I see a level of brazenness with, 'Let me see what I can get away with here.'"
The actress was sent off to Lynwood Correctional Facility, but spent only five hours in jail before being bailed out. She's now a free woman until the June 3 trial, though her lawyer will appeal the jail sentence before then.
So does that mean that Lindsay got off easy? Not really. The silver lining for Lindsay is that Judge Sautner decided to "give her an opportunity" by reducing the necklace theft from a felony to a misdemeanor. This means that in June, her lawyers will be fighting a much less serious charge. However, if the trial doesn't end in Lohan's favor, she's still going to jail. And either way, she has a ton of community service: 120 hours at the Los Angeles County morgue, and 360 hours at the Downtown Women's Center on Skid Row so she can, in the judge's words, see "how truly needy women... who have fallen on real hard times have to live." CNN calculates that it would take Lindsay three full months of nine-to-five workdays to complete the community service -- which could jeopardize Lohan's ability to tackle any movie roles in the near future (she was recently cast opposite John Travolta in the real-life crime drama Gotti: Three Generations).
A friend of Lohan's tells People that Lindsay is upset with the sentence -- but prepared to face the music at her trial.
"She is angry because she has been working so hard on turning her life around," says producer Nathan Folks, who says that Lohan is now sober. "She didn't do what they said she did. She didn't steal that necklace... (but) she is ready to do her time."
Lohan's community service is scheduled to start immediately at the Women's Center. The trail for her misdemeanor charge is set for June 3, with a pre-trial date of May 11.
